    The Game Won’t Start

All our previous experience with this kind of behavior points out to two things.

    1) An antivirus/firewall is blocking the app – please allow Planet Nomads in these programs, or try disabling them temporarily to see if that helps.

    2) Missing system files and libraries. This is caused by your OS not being up to date. Please make sure you have the latest version of Windows (we haven’t heard about this trouble on MAC and Linux).

This can be a martyrdom of having to let your computer run overnight (we had to, players had to), but it solves the issue in the end. Here are two examples from the forum: 1 & 2.

The game also needs the Visual C++ Redistributables (which in turn often needs the updated Windows mentioned above).

You can find the installation package in the folder where you have PlanetNomads installed (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Planet Nomads\ for Steam installation) in _CommonRedist\vcredist\2015 subfolder. There should be x86 and x64 versions. Please try to run the x64 version and check if it completes successfully or with an error

My Car Tilted Over – What can I do?

We’re figuring out a tool that would help you in this regard. Resourceful players have been putting more blocks on the side of the vehicle to tilt it over through gravity (and delete them once the car is back on the wheels).

Alternatively you can put it on a magnetic jack, build a pivot under the car and let it fall on that, turning in the process.

My Car Just Flew Into Space

No. This is not our first iteration of spaceflight. The physics are still a bit shaky. The problem is with the wheel going sideways and hitting other blocks/wheels. Make sure you build enough space around wheels and you put wheels 3-4 blocks from each other. You might get different results from different car designs. Best to get the hang of it in the Creative Mode where blocks don’t cost any resources.

My Car Won’t Run or Turn

Make sure you have the wheels set properly in BuildVision. If that’s not the case, then it’s connected with the bug when disconnecting two grids. It’s best not to build the jack (classic nor magnetic) on any other block but the ground. Here are some tips from fellow Nomads on Steam Boards. 1 & 2.

0.6.3 Update Paving the Way for Mobile Bases, Trailers and Trap Doors

Today’s 0.6.3 update brings quite a few things to make the Nomadic life more bearable. You’ll find them in the patch notes on Steam (or our forum).

It’s most important impact, however, lies in physics. Two little gems of blocks have been added – a rotating plate and a hinge. They might be small on their own, but boy the possibilities they open! When we had first tested them in alpha before Planet Nomads launched on Steam, we’d seen merry-go-rounds, wheel-operated blast doors and goal-scoring football players. The things that make perfect candidates to be featured in Nomadic Journals in the Ingenious Spotlight section.

    Physics Are Super-Steady Now

Ever since we began this journey and introduced vehicles in the first alpha version in August last year, the physics engine has been riddled with wobbling wheels that would tear any more complex vehicle into pieces and eventually take it off the planet surface. No more. Today’s update fixes that. Watch the video below to see what we mean.

It’s not 100% bullet-proof. But it’s about 80% of pure improvement. And that counts. Further good news – we believe we can improve it even more. If you still manage to get your vehicle flying, send us the save and we’ll do some tests and play some tricks.

    The Next Steps

Talking about improvements, our goal is to bring the review score of Planet Nomads on Steam to 80% positive reviews. We are convinced that every update for the game will bring us closer to that mark, especially the major ones coming later in summer.

We plan to remove the Swiss cheesiness of planets while keeping caves in. However this change isn’t possible without wiping saves – because it requires changes in the noises generating the planet, and afterwards the planets generated from identical seeds will be different and the things you’ve built could be… weird (as in levitating weird, completely submerged weird, on a different part of the planet weird).

So we’re going to compound all wipe-requiring changes (less holes on the planet, better animal path-finding, new starting biome) into a single update. Then we start working on a new set of planets with new biomes, which can be changed without affecting the original ones (AKA no wipes needed).

That’s it for today’s update. We know you guys eagerly await the FOV changer and key bindings. They are coming a bit later. Looks like it could be next week already.

For now, enjoy the new physics experience.

    Take care, Nomads.

    0.6.4 Taking the Pain Away

Today’s update is bound to make your Nomadic lives better. It brings you comfort with fully customized controls. Let’s you have it your way with your favorite field of view values for both first person and third person. And finally, when something goes wrong in Survival, you can load your save game as you see fit.

Planet Nomads is in a very early stage of Early Access and we don’t pretend there aren’t issues. Fortunately we got plenty of help from Nomads in identifying the main pain points. Now that the major ones are out of the way we can focus on expanding the Planet Nomads universe. (Sewing up the holes in the terrain is still planned, obviously).

As the game currently stands, the starting survival mechanics are well settled. You’ll be happy to know that the sleeping bag now offers more protection and is finally up to its task – to let you go on adventures even without a mobile base at hand.

Though once you get to the later phases of the game, mobile bases become the real deal, now that suspension and wheel physics has been fixed in the previous update. The difference between before and now can be seen in Jimmy’s experiments. A great deal of inspiration too.

There’s plenty of room to explore the design possibilities and finer tricks. Without worrying you will lose your creations, now that the manual save/load is in place. Plus, we think you will love the new Item Dispenser block – it makes inventory management during building completely seamless.

    Moving to the Next Phase

Planet Nomads is now a solid sandbox game. It is time to make the sandbox more interesting. The environment needs to provide more of a challenge. Expect more environmental hazards throughout the world – poisonous spores, meat-eating plants, radioactive anomalies [???].

With Thomas tweaking the animal AI, we can finally start deploying our vision for creature behavior. Make them act according to their essence and natural instinct. Surprise you. Scare you. Make you laugh. Become a real force of nature.

To better equip you against these dangers, we’ll be introducing guns too. We haven’t talked about them in much detail yet, but the ideas are flowing and once all pieces fit into place, we’ll share the plan with you.

Is there more coming in the next months? Points of interest? Custom in-game events? You bet.

We’re happy you’re here with us. We want to thank you for that by making you happy in return.

    Until next time, Nomads.

Automation in Motion – 0.6.5 & the Mining Machine

Today we’re introducing the first part of game-changing mechanics intended for the late game. It begins with automated mining. There’s a new block that you can place on the ground rich with resources (material veins), power it up and let it mine for you. Give the machine some time and its inventory starts getting filled with valuable resources.

    Production Lines

The next step includes a more streamlined (dare we say automated?) 3D printing that’s coming next week. When paired with the mining machine(s), containers and conveyor systems, the beginnings of factories and production lines emerge.

The automation of 3D Printers and other production blocks lies in allowing you to queue the production even if you don’t currently have the required resources for that. And why? Because the mining machine is up and mining. So you ask for a thousand basic frames, you give your newly founded factory enough time and you return back for a thousand basic frames to build the next big thing.

Is it currently needed? Maybe. It is certainly a necessary part of the long-term vision we have for Planet Nomads. It will become highly useful in the upcoming months.

Besides, there are Nomads who could make good use of it already.

    BuildVision Extended

With the increasing amount of machinery to look after and take care of, we’re pretty sure the upcoming Extended Buildvision will come in handy. Allowing Nomads to check their generators and production blocks at a glance, and immediately see their status, such as power demand and power load, queued production, remaining fuel and fuel usage…

    Generators to Consume Fuel

Right, generators will very soon consume fuel. Next week’s patch or the one right after.

    Bigger Greenhouse with Higher Yields

And finally food… fuel for the body. In the later stages of the game your belly will have a steady supply of goodies thanks to this production block.

Thanks for reading, Nomads. Now go check out the new mining machine and let us know what you think.

Planning Mass Production of Everything, Including Food (0.6.6 Update)

    Hello Nomads,

today’s update changes the way how you craft things. The whole process is automated. You begin with the mining machine that moves raw materials to containers. Newly automated 3D Printers and other production blocks take those materials and continuously produce whatever it is you have assigned for production. Check that in action in the Development Highlight video.

    Generators Consume Fuel

This change allows you to better plan your production and scale it up by volumes. To balance the uncharted growth however, generators now finally consume fuel and you need to fill them up from time to time. Adding up the much needed realism in terms of fuel consumption.

    Extended BuildVision

As you can see in the picture above, there’s also more information available in BuildVision. Being able to quickly assess the situation and find out where your input is required will save your time considerably too.

    Large Greenhouse

Finally, to make sure you have plenty of food to power you through your operations, we’re introducing a larger version of the greenhouse. It does come with two conveyor ports too.

New Starting Biome Coming by the End of July

There are two main reasons why Kubat has been creating this new biome. The first is to get more variety to the beginning of the game. And the second, more important one, is to give you a place to test your vehicles. A forgiving temperate climate and vast plains make this the place meant for driving.

That’s it for today. If all goes well, you’re going to get issued your assault rifles next week.

As soulguard puts it… Happy Nomading!

Unforeseen 6.7 & 6.8 Hotfixes and Oxygen Tank & Medium Armory in 0.6.9

    Hello Nomads,

These were some hectic times, these past few days. Starting the game localization brought major unexpected issues, as Petr has so aptly put in his patch notes on Steam. We’re also having national holidays here in the Czech Republic. These two events took a lot out of the available development time for this week’s patch. Still, we didn’t want to break the weekly cycle.

    Medium Armory

In line with all other production blocks, Armory got its medium version with conveyor ports for automated production.

    Oxygen Tanks

Always wanted to stay underwater longer, didn’t you, Nomads? Well now you can. Refill your suit oxygen levels immediately with the newly added oxygen tanks.

    Nomadic Journals and a Gun

Next week you’re going to get your first shooting tool… yes, these are called guns. An assault rifle. The model is still work in progress, but gives you a nice insight into things to come.

There’s going to be a new episode of Nomadic Journals and we’re finally showing who wins the box and what’s in it. Thomas will be on this episode to talk about the upcoming animal changes and performance improvements that are coming in the big update by the end of July.

Thanks for reading, Nomads. Don’t forget to check the new Medium Armory and Oxygen Tanks.

Take a Peak Under the Lid of New Animal AI – Nomadic Journals #13

    Hello Nomads,

two updates for today, one is on Steam and the other is in the form of the 13th episode of Nomadic Journals, in which Thomas talks about the new animal AI he’s been working on since… well since the May launch of Planet Nomads.

We’re also announcing the winner of the Ingenious Spotlight and the mystery box.

The 0.6.10 update is mostly about this new item you can craft in Medium Armory. It’s the personal defense rifle we showed you last week.

Other news include a better inventory and item management by adding 100x (Shift) and 10x (Ctrl) modifiers for crafting in 3D printers and other production blocks. There’s also the binding of hotbars to custom keys (for all our azerty users out there). Medium medbay marks the final missing Medium production block. Now every workbench has its equivalent with conveyor ports.

    BIG UPDATE DELAY

Nomads closely following the development Planet Nomads will notice the date of the expected big update (with the animals and terrain generation change) has been pushed three weeks ahead – set on 17th August. This is due to the summer season where our beloved halves insist we take them out for holidays. Which is to be expected. What we did not expect to see was Martin, our main Sandy guy, falling seriously ill in summer. His holidays turned into a week of bedtime, continuing to this week also. Instead of finalizing the terrain generation, Martin is now waiting for his test results. We do hope his health improves soon. So he can feel better again. And do some work at home besides sleeping.

There’s more people on the team of course, so we will use the extra time to add crash-sites, personal datapad which will contain useful info and will be good for saving the reports of what you encounter in the world and uncover in those crash-sites.

The two features we sadly didn’t manage to get in today, but are in the works already for next week, are 1) the autosaving frequency settings in options and 2) day/night cycle tweaks.

For a complete list of changes in 0.6.10, see the patch notes on Steam or our forum.

Thanks for reading the news, Nomads. We’ll keep ’em coming.

Get Outta Hole Free Winch and Other Useful Things

    Hello Nomads,

Before the more car-friendly terrain arrives on 17th August, we’re introducing another useful tool (in addition to the manual save/load) meant to get your cars out of holes, ravines and gorges – a winch!

That said, while that’s the main purpose of the winch and the reason we are adding it, pulling vehicles is certainly not the only application you could use it for.

We’ve seen what you are capable of Nomads, so we know you’re going to take us by surprise.

Check out how the two parts of the winch work in the game in the latest Development highlights.

    Shorter Nights

In other news, the crusade to make the day/night cycle feel just about right continues. Petr is going through your discussions on the forums and made the night about 4 times shorter in the 0.6.11.0 update. Hope you like this improvement.

    Heavy Rain

Visual effects finally meet the sound effects. When it rains, you’ll know.

What else is new? More power to the multitool, more music tracks played in each biome and survival stats lasting a bit longer.

As always, the full list of changes is up on Steam and our forum. Thanks for reading, enjoy the 0.6.11 patch, Nomads.

    Happy Nomading!

New Shapes Introduced to Planet Nomads by 0.6.12 Update

    Hello Nomads,

It’s Thursday and you know what that means. New update arrives today and its heaviest impact lies in the three new building blocks.

These three sloped arcs and round corners may be small, but a resourceful mind can already see them used in a much bigger scheme.

As you know, Planet Nomads physics affects everything. If you make a ball, the ball will roll.

Then there are quality of life improvers. We’re talking quicker saving, doubled length of the winch-rope, and safer ejection from cockpits.

Enjoy the new update and create the incredible machine.

Merging Two Months of Work into Development Branch

    Hello knowledge-hungry Nomads,

It’s good to see you here. Everything’s climaxing in two weeks time! What is climaxing and what is everything you ask?

The biggest update to Planet Nomads since adding survival in alpha back in March.

Let’s go through the main changes one by one.

    1. Faster Terrain Generation

Due to performance issues we must temporarily say farewell to caves. In return, you will get massively faster terrain generation, smooth vehicle riding and smoother game performance in general.

    2. New Starting Biome

After seeing a LOT of the green starting biomes in all the screenshots and videos we felt like it was time to add more variety.

    3. Mysterious Crash-Sites

When wandering the planet, your sensors will occasionally pick a black-box signal from crashed vessels. What are these? You’ll see in the game on 17th August.

    4. Deadly Flora

That’s right. New types of environment dangers are coming with the intent take your life away in various ways.

    5. Smarter, Varied and Way More Engaging Animals

Simply saying that we’ve added different types of behavior, more attacks and various particle effects simply doesn’t do justice to the majesty of these new animals. It’s best experienced yourself.

    Wipe Is Coming

It is still necessary to do it, because the planets will be all different. And while the upcoming crash-sites feature is closely connected to blueprints and could be utilized to save your current constructions, in the end we decided against it. We wouldn’t be able to guarantee it worked in every scenario and for everyone, potentially causing more damage than good. So instead we’re going to spend the time elsewhere and do a trade-in for more long-term benefits. That said, we will be able to salvage the materials, components and items from your old saves and send them in container to the new planet with you if you decide to continue from your old saves.

It will be worth it, Nomads, we promise.

How the Improved Animals Will Take You by Surprise

    Hello Nomads,

Work on the biggest update since we added survival back in March is going along nicely and the 0.7 should safely land on Steam and GOG next Thursday, 17th August. We’re also hoping to have a beta branch of the update available on Steam couple days in advance. That way our most dedicated Nomads can help us with even more thorough testing to make sure the Thursday update doesn’t break anything.

Now, last week we laid out what the update is going to entail – faster terrain generation without holes, new starting biome, crash-sites and beginnings of story, and reworked animals. In this post we’d like to focus on the animals and what behavior changes you can expect.

    Climate-Based Breeds

We’ve always intended to have the animals adapt to the environment they inhabit. With the upcoming update, that’s exactly what they’re going to do. Depending on the climate, they will look different. And only the fiercest ones survive in the harsher conditions, so you’d better expect them tougher in the north.

    Another Layer of Intra-species Diversity

Having only one specimen of each species doesn’t make much sense. The world is diverse and a herd family should include females, males, alpha males and their offspring.

    Every Dog Is Different

In nature, not every animal gets to be the alpha male. Younglings tend to stay with their mothers or near their homes. Others hunt to keep the herd alive. Similarly in Planet Nomads, every specimen has its own behavorial set. Let’s take a look at some examples of these custom behaviors.

    Alpha Males

As you’d expect, they are the biggest, toughest and most powerful of their pack. These don’t know fear and trying to scare them off is pointless and usually ends up badly one way or another. Not every alpha male is the same either, but it is these ones you will often find wandering furthest from their nest. Or nearest your settlement if it’s too close to their territory.

    Males

While not the leaders, they still act as protectors and food bringers, so expect to meet them on hunting missions further away from their nests.

    Females

Usually stay around their nests and look after the offspring, but for instance Nossal females are often known to be the main hunters of the pack.

    Younglings

These will stick to the nests and other flock members. However there are more bold ones occasionally that stray further away from the nest. These make for the easiest source of fresh meat if their parents aren’t around. Or if it’s not little Branns that are even harder to hit than their parents.

    Environmental Hazards

There’s another completely new aspect coming to Planet Nomads and that’s plants that will have a negative impact on your health, Nomads. Little is known about what exactly these newly growing plants entail and what level of threat they pose. Some are active at night, while others sleep at night and can be safely looted. It will be up to you to explore these new dangers and live to tell about the encounters.

Although the update isn’t finished yet, the changes that have already made it in clearly show these new features will make playing Planet Nomads a completely new story. You’re in for a treat, Nomads. Just one more week to get your hands on the 0.7 version. We call it Planet Nomads Awakening.

    Have a good one!
